The Award honors dedication and service to the advancement of graduate student education. Joan was nominated by sociology graduate students Sara Petrowsky and Jennifer Beggs.

2006 - 2007

The Sociology Department is pleased to announce that the Beatrice and Sydney Webb Committee has chosen MU graduate student David Overfelt as the 2006-2007 recipient of the Beatrice and Sydney Webb Award. The Award honors a student who has contributed to Sociologists without Borders. From a nomination letter: “Overfelt deeply embodies the spirit of the Webbs through his commitment to labor rights and progressive economic and social change. After completing his thesis--a community comparative study of WalMart's development and labor practices and community forms of resistance against these -- he was invited to sit on a development board in Columbia, Missouri. This position has allowed him to put his ideas and passions relating to constructing "spaces of justice" into action. He is also Missouri Chapter organizer for the newly reformed Students for a Democratic Society and has a deep and unwavering commitment to social justice, human rights, and democracy.”
