Alexandrea Ravenelle, who earned her MA in Sociology and her BA in Interdisciplinary Studies (Sociology, Women's and Gender Studies and Journalism) from MU has earned her PhD in Sociology from CUNY Graduate Center in New York City in May of 2018. Her book Hustle and Gig: Struggling and Surviving in the Sharing Economy, will be published in March 2019 by the University of California Press. Hustle and Gig is based on interviews with nearly 80 gig economy workers, and their stories underline the volatility of working in the gig economy. Hustle and Gig argues that sharing economy upends generations of workplace protections such as worker safety; workplace protections around discrimination and sexual harassment; the right to unionize; and the right to redress for injuries. Alexandrea is an Assistant Professor at Mercy College in New York.
